  • Fresh FM :: The Rhythm of Adelaide’s Youth Listen Live

FreshFM – this is the link to the area of the site that has their streaming radio stations – living in Canberra is very sucky radio station wise – but at least when I am near a net connection I can listen to some decent dance mixes all pushed outta home ๐Ÿ˜€

    Check it out!

  • A food review!
Its been a while since the last one, but here is a quickie. Long hours, dodgy breakfasts mean poor decisions when it comes to purchasing food. Hungry Jacks was this decision for lunch today (along with two other co-workers) as I said – Healthy Eating – Its a bad habit, I’ve given it the kick – actually I have not had HJ’s for a while and have no intention of making it a regular occourence.

Issue One: Large value meal means a large coke and large chips/fries, not a large coke and little chips/fries – negative points there.

Issue Two: Short Changed mate, by one dollar – negative marks

Issue Three: Did not let expired free upgrade slide with a warning – its not like I noticed the year had switched. Altough this could be corporate policy and not droid at window fault – so neutral.

Issue Four: Box rather than person to make orders – negative 1/2 mark.

The food itself was fresh and relatively tasty (for it being HJ’s) and what you would expect anywhere really and it certainly got rid of the hunger pains.

Lunch conversation was good and we have decided that the McDonald’s double quarterpounder with cheeze crossed with a HJ’s burger would be great – the HJ’s pattie, maccas sauce, onion and cheese with eithers bread.

Overall 2.5/5? – Better than Macca’s taste wise – macca’s wins hands down customer service.

  • It’s new laptop time for myself, and I was going to get a toshiba tecra S3. But apple have announced their new notebooks – “Macbook Pro” 15.4″ Widescreen notebooks with Intel Core Duo processors (1.67 or 1.83GHz). With Radeon X1600 graphics.

These look to be very nicely spec’d machines. I think I’ll get me one :D.

  • I recently recieved a missed call on my mobile phone (iMate SP3i) from 0395405101 or (03) 9540 5101. As I had recently started a new job interstate, I returned this unexpected phone call and recieved an automated answering service that started off explining that this was run by some Marketing or Market Research company and that I had won a prize $40 or greater, I hung up at this point (26 seconds).

Tonight (24-48 hours after the initial call) I spoke to several other people about this phone call and of the 4 people having dinner (Tudo Vietnameese in Canberra, VERY nice for reference) and all of them had also recieved missed calls from this number (none had called it back) three were able to verify via the call logs that this was the exact same number we came to the conclusion that this was likely a scam – designed to get you to accept a premium rate line call (via press a number to continue this call and accept phone charges) or a method to get you to release your personal information (address to send prize too, confirm name and birthday etal).

My advice is that if you have a missed call from this number and you google it before returning it, that you do not call it, I believe that you risk much more than you may gain. If you did call this number and went beyond my meagre 26 seconds, please create an account and leave a message, I would really be interested what happens beyond the initial greeting message.

    Edit (18 June 2006)

An updated number range is as follows

    • 02 8219 0500
    • 02 8303 8320
    • 03 8102 9565
    • 03 8558 0556
    • 03 8558 1441
    • 03 8558 1442
    • 03 8558 1443
    • 03 8558 1444
    • 03 8558 1445
    • 03 8558 1446
    • 03 8558 1447
    • 03 9540 2950
    • 03 9540 5101
    • 03 9540 5189
    • 03 9645 2474

There is an email running around with the text “Apparently it’s all part of a massive scam where they ring you up and hang up straight away, then when you ring back they promise you a prize and try to keep you on the line at $2.50/min by feeding you information about this wonderfull prize.” which while close is not accurate. You will only be billed at the standard phone call rate for numbers in the range/area (ie: STD rates are the maximum you face), the goal of the “missed/prank” call is to get you to listen to the entire message and THEN call the premium rate number given in the message, as long as you don’t call the 1902 number you should be allright.

  • Hamachi : Stay Connected

    Instant lan over the internet.

Create your own VPN like network to restrict (and allow the use of lan games) over the intenet with hamachi.

I need to look at this product myself oneday, ergo its entry into the hallowed halls of bugga.net

  • The file on the wordpress download site latest.tar.gz was actually the old version. If you grab the zip file it will actually be the new version as advertised.

This will likely be remedied soon, but if it is confusing you as to why this is happening, it is probably related to that.

  • Anti Spyware Software: Use more than one, use them regularly.

Adaware – http://Lavasoft.de download the VX2 plugin for it also.
Ewido: – http://www.google.com (free mode is more than good enough)
    Microsoft Anti* Beta http://www.microsoft.com
    Spybot: http://security.kolla.de

Hijack This is another useful tool to see if you have anything that should not be there.

    Tips:
Avoid browsing any porn or “popular” sites with lots of advertising using internet explorer.
Don’t install toolbars (Google is orrite, yahoo might be as well)
Popup says need to install XYZ dont click ok.

Avoid Peer to Peer apps (for windows) like the plauge most of these are funded through the installation of spyware onto end users PC. Research them before installation (utorrent, Azureus are good bit torrent clients).

Make sure that the site you are downloading from is legit, make sure (use google to double check) that the site you visit is the actual site that the software is released on (ie: microsoft.com for ALL microsoft downloads, dont use micr0softupdateness.com/speshulpatches/ if you were directed to by some page which might or might not exist)

Dont click on the “You have a problem with your PC”

Dont download the free little handy apps that might be available on the net without scanning and researching them thoroughly beforehand.

Do not use an Admin or Power User level account to do everything. Create a standard user account, its not immune to some of this, but it helps

Try Opera http://www.opera.com or Firefox http://mozilla.org rather than IE, they are a lot less suseptible to this. (Some places see almost 50/50 IE/FF distribution (Somethingaweful.com for exampe) which means their usage is growning, and awareness for web dev’s is too.

Is Antivirus Needed, anti virus does NOT typically stop or pick up on Spyware infestations:
Free versions that people report good experiences of: Avast, Antivir and AVG Free Edition (http://free.grisoft.com)

  • I have now landed in Canberra and will now be living here for at least the next six month.

Looks like it will be an interesting time for me ๐Ÿ˜€
